Fun Matches

A Fun Match is an informal match held by any individual or organization who would like to practice Treibball as played by NATE Rules.  It is not sanctioned by NATE, therefore, runs do not count toward titles. Handlers and dogs do not need to be registered with NATE to participate in a Fun Match. Fun Matches may be videoed and used to demonstrate the grounds and capabilities of potential hosts for sanctioned matches. Feedback to NATE is encouraged.

Sanctioned Matches

A Sanctioned Match may be held by any individual or organization who would like to provide opportunities for exhibitors and their dogs to gain competition experience in a trial-like setting. NATE rules of competition must be followed. Teams may be scored and given placements, but credit is not given towards titling. Handlers and dogs do not need to be registered with NATE to participate in a Sanctioned Match. A NATE Sanctioned Match is a prerequisite for hosting a NATE trial and gives provisional judges experience toward becoming an approved NATE judge. Sanctioned Matches offer potential trial hosts, judges and stewards experience needed to offer NATE sanctioned trial events.

Sanctioned Trials

A Sanctioned Trial is held by an approved Trial Host. The Trial Host does not need to be a NATE member but does need to hold a Sanctioned Match prior to a Sanctioned Trial. Exhibitors and their dogs must be registered with NATE. Judges must be approved NATE judges. Placement and qualifying ribbons include the NATE logo and are provided by the Trial Host. Qualifying legs, titles, and title ribbons will be awarded by NATE.

Can anyone host a Match or Trial? Yes, although an organized training school or club will find it easiest to assemble the necessary equipment and volunteers.  Individuals may host events and do not need to be members of NATE to do so.

What do I have to do to host a Sanctioned Trial?  Details of this process are found in our NATE Rules Handbook but include the following:

The Trial Host will need the following staff for their event:

  • A NATE-approved Judge
  • Timer
